GM Jr.: The Podcast That Knows You Win Football in the Trenches
GM Jr. is a podcast about what makes a good football team. You would think this would be obvious to everyone, especially the 32 General Managers whose responsibility is to build the teams. Unfortunately, the importance of starting with a highly effective Offensive and Defensive Line seems to be beyond the ken of mortal understanding. Mediocre quarterbacks can win Superbowls behind a ridiculous Offensive Line that spends most of the game on the field because its ridiculously violent and murderous Defensive Line is firmly in the business of getting the ball back after three downs.
Frequently, Fantasy Football Teams are drafted based on the reputations or past performance of star players who may have had a career year the previous year or are touted as a game-changing, franchise-elevating, can’t-miss rookies. In the case of wide receivers, the vast majority of them have quiet rookie years as they adjust to the speed of the NFL – you need to remember the hype from two years ago to know who has a chance to be great, and most important is their ability to memorize the playbook and to run a route correctly.
Running backs can have an immediate impact, but their offensive line will tell you more about their chances for success than their college stats. Prototypical size and speed, being younger than 27, run-first offensive philosophy, ability to catch passes and the lack of a viable second option all combine to tell you what the future holds for a running back in the upcoming season.
Quarterbacks, kickers, tight ends and defenses all have their hallmarks for success in the upcoming season, and while strength of schedule can tell you a lot, how do you know whether that other team from last year will be anywhere close to as hard to beat this year? GM Jr. has a pretty good guess, and from predicting actual strength of schedule based on offseason successes or disasters, to knowing whether the Offensive Coordinator is about to completely waste 20% of a player’s career this year, GM Jr. will put you in the best position to absolutely crush your opposition.
You won’t be able to draft every player GM Jr. predicts will be great, but you’ll definitely be able to avoid the likeliest disasters and chuckle to yourself as your friends draft a tremendous bust followed by a complete zero. Every year can be destroyed by injuries, but GM Jr. will talk you through the best handcuffs and how to fill your bench with potential second-half heroes to hedge your bets.
There are no guarantees in life or in Fantasy Football, you may disagree with the thirteen-year-old, but write down what you were told to do at the beginning of the season and then look at who won your league and see if it matches up. More often than not, the basic building blocks that every general manager should know but doesn’t, prove out. Crush your friends, then rub their noses in the fact that a Seventh Grader told you how to beat them.
Jack
Jack, the GM Jr., is a 7th Grader whose experience playing Madden football from EA Sports has led to him having an encyclopedic knowledge of all 32 NFL Teams’ 53-man rosters. Jack’s time spent playing Madden, both historic and current has led to him restructuring and reconstructing teams and then naturally to Fantasy Football. Jack has very strong opinions on how and NFL Team should be built through the draft and free agency, and what teams do in the offseason cause s Jack to re-evaluate their skill position players for the upcoming season.
“Past performance does not guarantee future success,” is a maxim that everyone has heard – Jack would add to it: “especially if three fifths of your offensive line died in a horrible boating accident.” Jack is extremely skeptical of offensive coordinators, believes that run-blocking should be employed on passing plays also, and that RPO and the air-raid system are really the only way to operate a football team. A fan of the Baltimore Ravens, Jack feels strongly that defenses should, as much as possible, consist entirely of ravenous feral dogs whose playbook is entirely made up of recipes for eating quarterbacks.
If you are the sort of person who would love to dominate your Fantasy Football League AND let them know that you got advice from a 7th Grader in order to beat them, then GM Jr. is the podcast for you!
JAKE
Jake was originally tutoring Jack in math, but as time went on and it was discovered that Jake is a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the pitch and tenor of the trash-talk eventually made this podcast inevitable. Jake is studying to be a teacher and is extremely patient with Jack, which is very necessary to co-host the podcast.
Jake’s knowledge of football equals Jack’s and he has a very good voice. As a moderator, Jake provides his takes on all of the factors they’ve both identified as key determinants of individual skill players’ likelihood of success in the upcoming season. “It’s great that Christian McCaffrey was great last year, but his left tackle is now playing with Isiah Pacheco,” Is the sort of point that Jake will make routinely.
Jake sets the agenda and keeps the show on the rails, getting information out of Jack and into your hands.
